Oaxaca's latest offering in lodging options is a
small hotel with a casual and comfortable family ambiance.Once a cozy bed and
breakfast frequented by students, travelers and "pensionados" seeking a
comfortable but affordable place to stay, the Hotel Mariposas boasts a tasteful
renovation (complete with colonial touches) that offers more comforts but
retains its intimate atmosphere and its affordability. It's 5 suites are all
equipped with kitchens and a private bath, and face large or small flowering
interior patios. The second level suite has an enchanting view of Oaxaca's
steepled skyline, and another (on the ground level) is completely adapted for
wheelchair guests. The 4 single or double habitations have their own private
bath, large closet, desk, and ample space for long or short-term stays.
In addition, the hotel's location is spectacular. Just five minutes walking distance from the Zocalo, the hotel is also bordered by the beautiful Llano park with its several sculptures and fountains. The cathedral of Santo Domingo is also just a step away, as well as the favorite nightspot Candela, where one may listen and dance to the finest salsa music in town.
Above all, the attentions and hospitality of the owner, Señora Teresa Villareal, are what makes the Hotel Mariposas a most desirable place to relax and enjoy the sites and sensations that Oaxaca has to offer. First-time travelers to Oaxaca or travelers with little knowledge of Spanish can rest assured that they are in good hands. A native of Oaxaca herself, Sra. Teresa's knowledge of Oaxaca is extensive, and her advice regarding food and dining, medical care, tourist sites, and nightlife are invaluable. In addition, the layout and special touches (such as cafe-style chairs and tables with sun umbrellas, and en ever-ready supply of fresh coffee) create an inviting communal space in which guests may mingle and make new friendships.
Comments from our guests:
Teresa Villareal’s home has been a perfect place
for me to live during my stay in Oaxaca. I have felt like I have the privacy of
a my own apartment while the comfort and fun of living with a family. Teresa
lives 3 minutes from the language schools and 8 minutes from the center, in a
beautiful neighborhood near a park. I will remember my stay here forever. She
truly makes you feel that “Mi casa es su casa”.

Each
morning we would wake up to the smells of fresh tea brewing and a delicious
gourmet breakfast. The warm smile of our genial hostess and pleasant
conversation around the breakfast table were a great way to start the day. We
met people from various countries and walks of lives. It was interesting to
trade stories with fellow travelers. Being centrally located at 517 Pino Suárez,
it was easy to visit the various sites of interest in Oaxaca; restaurants,
markets, parks and transportation were easily accessible. Our stay in Oaxaca was
very enjoyable thanks to the knowledge and help of Teresa Davila. We’ll be
back.

I have lived
in Oaxaca for three months and 517 Pino Suárez has been my home. I feel truly
lucky to have found a place that was safe, friendly and private. During my three
month stay, Señora Teresa was there if I needed anything. As a woman traveling
alone, this was a great comfort. I recommend this wonderful home to anyone
coming to Oaxaca.
